Default Tailgate struts

Does anyone have issues with their tailgate struts?

The tailgate seems to slow down instead of 'popping' up to it's maximum height once opened. I once hit my head on it, reaching into my boot, because the struts didn't push the gate up fast enough.

Is it because it's cold outside or are there gas issues/faults within the struts?

I don't have a powered tailgate.

Duck, welcome aboard! Would you consider fitting new struts? They definitely get weak.

Actually I haven't considered changing them, unless they were totally shot. I don't mind a tinker though, so I would prefer to refurbish them in some way if at all possible

The struts seem to last about 5 years before going limp

Mr. Duck, can you re-charge tiny gas struts?

There are several places that rebuild struts which the car restorers use . Unless you have a specialty car or a unique shock it's cheaper to buy new ones.

They are very inexpensive and very easy to install.

Done a little research and it seems like it may cost more to fix them, as opposed to just replacing. Will have to look into the parts... Thanks guys!

I replaced both struts on our 2006 wagon last year. They were around $US22 each. Very simple to swap out. I did the hood, too, when that went limp. No big deal.
