Default Windshield wiper ghost?

It can be sunny, no clouds, not a drop and the wipers will go off just once. It's random, but it has happened about 4 times in the last week or so. Once it was 2 swipes in a row, then just one swipe 2 other times.

Anyone know what causes that to happen?

Thanks

Similar things have happened to me. I've seen a bug/insect walk past the sensor and trigger the wipers. Also a bug splattering against the windshield while driving and spilling its guts over the sensor will trigger a wipe. Perhaps that is what happened to you?

Happens all the time when someone up front uses his windshield spray.

I've not had it happen, but I always try to remember to turn them off manually, and turn them back on when it rains, just out of fear of them turning on when not needed and smearing the windshield. I like the auto wipers from the aspect of having the speed and delay adjust as needed, but I prefer to only have them active when I want them active. Same thing with the lights... I always turn them off, because I don't like them turning on/off every time I go under a bridge or pull in the garage. I just think it's unnecessary wear on the bulbs and ballasts.

In case anyone is interested, the rain sensor wipers on the B8 models can be turned off by the dealer through the computer. You are then left with good old fashioned intermittent wipers that do what you set them to do. My rain sensor wipers never worked properly and from what I hear they seldom do....my intermittent wipers work just fine!!

You can also turn off the afterwipe feature with a vagcom cable. I found that afterwipe to be really annoying, and in winter it will just smear salty crap all over your clean windshield again. Good concept but I personally hate it.

I guess it's possible, but it happened in the day time and there aren't many bugs out like there are at night. I didn't notice any 'new' bug guts when the wipers went off. But it is certainly possible that something hit the sensor and I just didn't notice.

I wish I could say I remember if there was a car in front of me when it happened

I think the auto wipers work pretty well. Not perfect, but ok. My biggest peeve is others that have their wipers on full blast when it's barely raining. I like the auto lights too. I don't drive under bridges, nor do I have a garage, so I don't have them going on/off more then necessary.
