Default B200096 Static Fault code on Virtual Dash

Hi All,

Got a YELLOW critical warning lite on my 2017 Audi A4 SLine with the Virtual cockpit dash. Took it into local dealer and they want to replace the entire dash for $37000. Car only has 42,000 miles on it.

Code was B200096, static fault for instrument cluster control module according to my service bill.

Any thoughts on how to eliminate the warning light or what could be a fix ? Remove and replace battery connections ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The generic OBD-II mode code B2000 is not useful, it's about as good as that yellow light. It says nothing about the actual problem. You might try with a scan tool like VCDS or OBDeleven and get an actual DTC code that might say something informative.

Obviously, the repair quote is beyond stupid. How you left there with that as their statement, I have no idea. The VC is only $3000 sticker, and it's two hours max to replace and program that thing. So take a 0 off and you have a reasonable quote.

I sure hope that $37,000 is a typo!! $3700 is believable.

With how much Audi's labor rate is now, I could totally believe that. LOL

Default Typo

My bad, fat finder typo, $3700 for dash replacement. Sorry about that.

On the service write up from the technician, he mentions another code: 40412, Not sure if that's the code for his diagnosis or the fault code he found.

You seem highly educated on this, what are your thoughts ? If I do grab a Scan tool or OBD11, what format would this control module code look like ?

Thanks for your help.

$3700 seems perfectly reasonable for a dealership quote at full part price. Obviously, I'd buy it somewhere else and just pay them to install it. Even a used one, https://www.ebay.com/itm/385360893757 Just note with used ones, the mileage cannot be adjusted downward. So you need a used one with less miles than your current so it can be adjusted upward at programming time. Though if it's close, who cares about a K or 2 miles to save 2 grand. 8W5920890E, lots of resources for one, new and used, at better prices.

As for the DTC, that is the question. https://www.ttforum.co.uk/threads/br...2012697/page-2 Looks like it's likely to be an internal memory chip failure? Ie, not something you're going to fix yourself. Just get a new (to you) one and have the dealership install and program it and carry on. Though, it is yours, so make sure you get the failed one back. Maybe you can unload it as parts for those out there who do know how to repair VCs at the circuit level.

Default Dealer Alternative

Hey Guys,
Tried a few local European specialty repair shops near by, to see if I supplied the USED VC dash, could they install it and reprogram it to match my current mileage ( used one has 27K and car has 44K) and to calibrate things like fuel and whatever else is needed.
My question is, is there PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE that only an AUDI dealer has that is needed to do something like this, or should a shop that works on Audi's be able to do such ?

If anyone is in the ChicagoLand area and has a reference to a shop that they can recommend, I would be very appreciative.

Thanks to all.

I would imagine that the VC is vin coded to the car, which probably requires ODIS to unlock.

Since the used VC mileage is below your current VC mileage, you may not be able to remove component protection using official ODIS S online method.
