RO: Strange engine behaviour
Today, my car's engine, decided not to function anymore. Suddenly the engine started to shake like hell. No "check engine" indicator turned on. Turned off the engine and asked a friend to bring VCDS to check the cause of the engine malfunction. But, to our surprise, there were no DTC faults on the engine. The only strange thing is that all 6 injector's corection were like +5 or -6, and so on. I have checked the engine oil filter for metal shavings and there was no metal shavings. The fuel rail pressure is correct, engine oil pressure also correct. The engine does not knock or something like that. It only shakes to the point where all the car is shaking visibly. Could be a timing chain issue?
The car is Audi A4, 3.0Tdi Quattro, 272HP.
You pretty much lost me at TDI. Assuming the engine still runs, if you have no DTCs, the only thing I can suggest is something external to the engine. Check the belt driven mechanical auxiliaries such as alternator / starter - generator and AC compressor or whatever else may exist on the TDI. Could be a drive belt problem or a bearing problem. Does the TDI have a balance shaft? If so and its chain drive that might be a candidate.
Pull the valve cover off and carefully examine the valves. There was a thread not that long ago on the A4 forum where a dead cylinder / zero compression resulted from a broken valve spring. That individual appeared to be 'lucky' because the retainer did not pop off which would have dropped the valve into the piston. He posted the diagnosis; but, I don't recall any repair follow up so I don't know whether there was damage beyond the broken spring. Depending on the engine and a suitable valve compressor tool, it may be possible to replace a broken spring without removing the head. .
