2017 A4 Quattro. I use Shell 93, and I'm always quoted 485-500 miles range. When I first owned the car, I lived in a city and drove less, and I'd get 420 miles range after each fill-up.

I've always assumed that the more often you drive above 40-50 mph, the further a tank of gas gets you.

This is going to be different for everyone and will even change on your own car depending on driving circumstances. One time I took a trip to Vermont and it was a 340mile drive. When I got there I was averaging 34.8mpg. I filled up and my distance to empty shot up to 595. When Im averaging about 24mpg my distance to empty after fillup is around 450-465. The newest DTE will depend on your prior driving characteristics. As per request, Im using 93 Conoco.

Update lol
just filled up, 91 octane at North Atlantic. 810km. Definitely the highest I’ve seen yet. And I’ve only been cruising around ‘the bay’...no highway lately.

The highest I've gotten on fill up is 870kms until empty. That being said I've never gotten that much. When I take a trip to Ottawa from Toronto it usually takes about half a tank which is about 475kms but then usually gets ruined with city driving. I think if I kept on the highway driving I would likely get around 800kms of actual range. That's also in the warmer months as well. Usually in the winter months my range drops to about 760-780kms on my fill ups. My trip to work daily is 35kms each way on highway. Trip into work is a breeze and no traffic, but the trip home is usually about 15-20 minutes in traffic. Also fill up with Mobil 1 93 or Petro Canada 94. I have used 91 and do get the same results though.

Any reason why you still use 93/94 if you get the same results with 91?

Costco only goes to 91, but I’m willing to try out and use 93+ if it’s worth it

Typically 510-515 miles. I doesn't matter if I'm midway through a long trip, getting 34-35 mpg over the last 6 hours, which can get to 500+, or slogging around town getting 22-24 mpg for the last hour which would only yield 350mi. It always reports 510-515. Brand, octane, etc., doesn't matter.

When I'm doing mostly city driving, it starts at 500+ and slowly works its way down to meet me at 350-400. It's as if it always thinks the rest of the tank is going to be highway, regardless of the recent history.

I've hit 500+ before fill-up, showing 20 miles remaining, so the indicated number is accurate/possible with highway driving.

There is a common misconception that you will get better range from using higher octane fuel. In higher compression engines (mostly turbo) the reason you have to use premium fuel is so that you get a complete combustion. With lower octane fuel there is a chance of getting pre-ignition (knock). With turbo and high compression engines you are able to extract more HP if you use a higher octane fuel and increase the boost. That's why you will see lots of tunes offer different HP gains with 91 octane and 93 octane. I use higher octane out of habit and plan on running either a JB4 or dedicated tune. There is a dealer group near me that offers Unitronic tunes that will give me a +51HP and +63TQ on 91, or +59HP and +73TQ on 93 octane.

When I filled up this afternoon it reported a range of 540 miles. Historically the estimated range after fill up is 510-520 miles. The long term fuel economy using 91-93 octane has typically been around 28.5-29.0 mpg. The last three times I have filled up I have used 87 octane and the long term fuel economy is up to 29.3 mpg (and the estimated range 540 miles).

The long term avg speed has stayed at 37 mph. Which seems really slow given the liberties I take with the speed limit.

The car actually gets only about 350 miles per tank before the estimated range reaches around 50 miles and I refuel so the estimated 500+ mile range is clearly optimistic.

The algorithm is based on your past driving... and is actually shockingly optimistic about your past driving. Mine usually is in the 700 kms when filling up, which... it shouldn't be... given the dreadful city fuel economy in the hell of downtown Toronto.

I think the highest I have ever seen was in the high-800s or low-900s. How do you get it that high? Drive to Montreal with adaptive cruise at 115ish in Ontario, 110 or less in Quebec. I arrived in suburban Montreal with an average of 5.8L/100km, avg speed of 98km/h, total 565.2km (yes, I took a picture of the instrument cluster). Don't drive a lot in Montreal. Fill up car (which hadn't left Toronto with a full tank, I might add). Drive back to Toronto under the same circumstances. Fill up car again when getting here. Boom, absurdly high range when the last ~1200 kms were at highway speeds.

The funny thing is that all of this dances around the fact that this car has an... undersized gas tank... at 58ishL, IIRC. But it has very good highway fuel economy which translates to reasonable range at the highway...

That is because in Audi's largest region certification testing is based on the fuel tank being filled to 90% capacity for the test cycle. A smaller tank means less fuel, which means less weight, which means better certification numbers. Some have been known to also heat the fuel for test cycles. They used to offer a larger tank as no cost or low cost upgrade. This is not unique to Audi. Ridiculous of course.
