engine oil on audi a4 cabriolet
I have a 2003 a4 cabriolet audi and last night I had to put some oil in it, just making sure this is ok because I'm not sure. I put 5W-30 in it and the label said exceeds SN/SM. But in my manual my specific car says SJ, SN/SM was the cloest I could find. The 5W-30 was exceptable but I was just making sure the other part was ok tooo.

You will have best all around performance using the correct 502.00 oil.
You can't default to buying an "SJ" oil when it hasn't been produced for some time
The API standards change often and that's part of the reason VAG has developed their own lube oil specs...they're far more specific than a generic API recommendation. I think the VAG 502.00 standard has probably been around since the mid '90s and it's still the primary recommendation for the gas-engined cars today.
