I am the original poster and I just got the car back from the dealer. apparently it found a wire disconnected to the a/c controls. It has been consistently hot these past few days and expected to be so going forward for a while, so I really can't tell if the fix solved my problem, but the fact that they actually found a loose wire is encouraging.

I'll know for sure when the fall arrives.
