You quoted the 3.0T torque quite a bit on the low side

OOPS, fixed it in the original post.

Thanks for catching that!

The base gasoline engine in Germany right now is a 2.8 FSI with about 200 HP and 206 lb ft - which is less than the 2.0T here. The A4 is a much smaller car with a lot less attractive interior, that alone would make me get the A6. The current A6 2.0T still has more power than the 2.8 they offered in 2001 that had 200 hp and 207 ft-lbs.

If they offered the A6 2.0T with all the options here (Prestige incl. quattro and the 8 speed), I would totally get that. The 2.0T's I have driven here in the TT, and the A4 have more than sufficient power - 7.5s to 60 mph is plenty for highway merging and flowing with traffic. Hell, I'd go for the 2.0TDI if they had that, 177 hp and 280 lb-ft and 35+ combined mpg ...
This isn't Germany (or Europe for that matter).

I'm fully aware of the smaller engine options offered across the pond. My opinion stems from having an A4 Avant w/ 2.0T, a S4 w/ 3.0"T", and now the A6 w/ the 3.0.

I'll retract my statement a bit, if you could buy a "fully-loaded" (or at least Quattro, 8=Speed and w/ Prem+ or Prestige) w/ the 2.0T and didn't care about hp/tq then I would say go for it.) Since you can't, I just think it's too much to give up to save some $$$. Which is why I would look at the A4 instead, since you CAN get a fully-loaded model w/ the 2.0T.

I agree if size of the car isn't an issue (i.e. driver does not need more space for car seats/family/or the driver doesn't mind the fit of the car) the A4 will save $$$ and the 2.0 is definitely quick enough! The driver will also save $$$ getting the engine tuned if 2.0 is too slow for his/her taste.

You'd have to give up some technology (and a better interior) though by going to the A4. still a great car though

You're right, there was big difference in tech...maybe the new redesigned A5 could be an option, since it seems to be getting some of the tech the A6 has...but I'm sure when that is hitting the States.

I am leaning towards the 2.0 - I have spoken to a few dealers on the East Coast that have them (seems like they haven't reached the West Coast yet) - and they tell me that other than the obvious less horsepower that the A6 is a great car with the 2.0 - especially with the $8,000 savings and the increased mpg. I won't buy one however until I can test drive it.

Good deal. how long before your dealer can get one for you to test drive?

We are actually visiting the East Coast next week and hoping to find one to test drive. I did an inventory search and found a few dealers in Tennessee and Virginia already have them. I spoke to various people at those dealerships who have driven the 2.0 - one of them told me that "Ray Charles wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the 2.0 and 3.0" - I was going to tell him that at this point I don't think Ray Charles really cares! But the point most said to me is that yes it is not as quick off the line and if I don't need 4 wheel drive then it's a great buy - especially at $44,000 for the Premium Plus.

Sounds like it should fit your needs well. I'd love to hear your impressions after you've driven both.
