Default Does it cost extra or save changing 20" rims to 19"

My audi dealer has a car that is mostly what I want. It has 20" wheel and I'd like to have 19". The difference in price is $800 on the audi site.

Can they replace it with 19" wheels instead and if they can...if this going to cost me extra or can I get another ~$800 off for going with the 19" instead? Please advice. Thanks.

Depends on the dealer. Technically, the tire take offs (and maybe the wheels as well) would be considered used in most locales, even with just a few miles on them. Switching wheels and tires from one new car to another messes up the dealer since the Moroni labels are no longer accurate. I would think most dealers wouldn't want to deal with that, but you never know.

I doubt a dealer would give you the $800 difference back in any case. However, an even no money swap down (vs a swap up) might be more attractive to a dealer. Doesn't hurt to ask and see what they say.

Dealers don't swap rims anymore because configurations are tied to vins now. They will sell you some rims for an outrageous price though.

One thing I am finding is for some reason the size of the 19 inch tires the A6 takes run more than comparable 20's but a decent amount, as much as $40-$50 a tire if you get a good tire. That helped me decide that when I buy replacement wheels for my A6 that will have 19's I am going to 20's the first set of tires makes up for the increase in wheel price then each set after that save some $$$ on tires.

Pirelli P Zero cost for 20" and 19" tires is only $5 (about $20 with the discounts)on TireRack.com

The OP was asking if a dealer would switch from 20" to 19" wheels when his car comes in and what he might expect, not about the cost difference of purchasing 19/20" tires.

I understand the OP question, but just supplying information to help him decide on wheel size since dealer will likely charge too much and he might be best shopping elsewhere and that going from 19 to 20 will cast more in tires as well.

If I go to Tirerack and look up tires for the A6 in 18,19 and 20 inch sizes the 19s are more expensive, more than offsetting the slightly higher cost for aftermarket wheels. I was looking at Hartmann wheels and the price per wheel for the 20 is about $65 a wheel more than a 19, but when I shop for tire, take the new Michelin A/S 3 the 19 costs $286 per tire, vs. $247 per tire and the 18 is $220. Similar price differences with other brands as well. So if you are shopping for wheels it is worth noting that bigger wheels do not mean the ties will cost more, in this case the tires are less.

Even General GMAX AS3 the 19 is $187 each and the 20 is $130 each. Made it a simple decision for me to order 20 inch Hartmanns vs. the 19s.

I don't think the price of tires is what the OP is concerned about. He may want the 19" because of the better ride on lousy roads due to increased rubber. Or maybe he likes the design of the 19's better. Or maybe he can come back to this thread he started and enlighten us.

Yup, Want 19 inches for the better ride, decrease risk of running a flat and cheaper to change....so If go 20 inch first...I can change to 19" tires...by just changing the tires? I thoughs rims had to be changed as well.
