Default Leaving the car with the ignition on...

After having my 2013 for a few days, a couple of pieces of behavior have annoyed me regarding how the car operates when you leave it with the ignition on:

It took me a while to figure out that you can't leave the car with the keyfob, otherwise it shuts itself off. Okay, makes sense on a certain level to not allow the car to continue to run when the key isn't present, fine. If I leave the fob in the car, I can get out and it will still continue to run. However, the incessant loud beeping that is associated with the "Turn igniton off before leaving vehicle!" message on the info center is rather annoying.

I don't mind if the behavior of shutting off when leaving with the key remains, but is there any way, perhaps with VAG COM, to at least get rid of the beeping when the key is left in the car? I looked through the manual and MMI guide and didn't see any mention of any built-in way of defeating this.

Yeah. Kind of like Stop/Start although this one is forced on you. Annoying, but I guess it saves a bit of gas and is a safety feature if you have kids in the car who decide to be like daddy and try to put it in drive as you go out to the mailbox. I'm not going to take the keys out of my pocket just to keep the engine running though, as it defeats the keyless convenience feature. I'll live with it.

I have left the car many a times with the key, to come back to it to find it still running... I guess for all tha don't have the convenience key feature, this works.

The reason for leaving the car with the key in my pocket with the engine running was to make a quick dash into the nearest quickcheck and keeping the AC running during the heat wave we are facing today!

This is the same thing with mine.

It is only with 2013 models on...it is tied into the Start/Stop technology

Argh, that's a bummer. It seemed to be mentioned with the Start/Stop stuff in the manual, so I turned Start/Stop off and that doesn't defeat the car whining about me getting out of the car or shutting off when I take the fob with me.

I hear some German Audi engineer in my head... "Ze auto -will- shut off vhen ze fob leaves, ja?! Und you vill like it!"

Ah, that makes sense -- as I've left my 2012 running without the key several times and it kept running.

I have the convenience key feature and the car keeps running when i leave it with the fob in my pocket. What I wish Audi would do is allow me to lock the damn doors when I leave it running. My BMW had that feature. I could technically, although I never did it this long, could go into the mall for 20 minutes, leaving the car running with the doors locked, and come out without worrying someone would steal it. Great feature.

Here in the UK, and I suspect it is the case elsewhere in Europe, it is illegal to leave a car unattended with the engine running. This is primarily on the grounds of basic safety. It would also be much easier to steal a car with the engine running than not as the thief would not have to get past the immobilizer to drive off. Also the environmental lobby would have a field day if this type of activity was encouraged, with cars constantly (and wrongly) being singled out for causing the greenhouse effect and hole in the ozone layer single-handed car manufacturers are having to do everything they can to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, the introduction of stop/start being just one example of the action being taken.

We are also seeing roadside signs encouraging drivers to switch their engines off at places such as railway crossings and queues for car parks to reduce the levels of roadside pollution (the EU has set targets for each country and failure to meet those targets results in significant fines.

With fuel currently costing something like the equivalent of $7.76 per US Gallon here there is also the financial consideration and thus not much demand for such a practice

That's funny right there. But Americans want to leave their car running so we can get our lattes/6 pack, but agreed, sounds like a start/stop feature. I can get out and get the mail with the car running, although it does beep and let you know.
