does your opener have a "learn" button? i didn't even have to point the clicker at the bumper.

Had a similar issue and had to hit the "learn" or memory button on the opener after attempting the remote/3 rings process. once done it worked immediately. The manual for your opener should tell you where the button is if you don't know ( a little red button on mine.)

I downloaded the garage manual online and it walked me through it. After pushing the memory/sync button I pushed the home sync button twice and it was synced.

If I remember correctly- I followed the steps given by the MMI then pushed#1 opener. There was a prompt about "does the garage door open?" after this prompt (since it didn't open) I pushed the learn button on the opener..then went back into the car and pushed #1 again..and it worked fine.
The opener should have a 30sec (or so) window during which you can get into the car and push the button.

Odd. after I did the three rings (blinked three times) I went back in and was instructed to push the homelink (assigned #)button 2x then asked if it worked--> (obviously no) then directed to the actual opener.

did you get back in and press the homelink button? The car's manual is near useless about this unfortunately.
