2002 S6 Avant
Pros and cons?
Things to look for in one with 98k miles?
Common problem areas? Common maintenance items? Timing belt or chain?
I did a search and went through 4 pages of results without finding much. Can you guys help me out?
Thanks,
Chris
Now on to the bad. Dont be scared, i own one and wont sell it!
- terribel fuel economy 14/19
- timing belt $2000-2500 every 75k
- torque converters can fail - they were marginally sized inthe first place. A fe $1000 if it fails.
- the usual C5 front suspension bushings every 60-90k
- no manual option
That's pretty much it

Plastic coolant reservoir tank prob cracked.
Plastic pipe from coolant reservoir tank to upper radiator hose.
I absolutely love driving the S6 and smoking pony cars on freeway sweepers, but it was this very design decision that convinced me never again to buy another Audi.
To the original poster, the driving dynamics of the S6 is untouchable in the wagon class of automobiles. Reliability-wise, it's pretty solid for a $60K car, but nowhere near the longevity of a solid Japanese car or the rock solid engineering of an old BMW. Just be absolutely diligent with your maintenance and it'll be fine (regular trans fluid and timing belt changes + bushings upkeep). Oh and that stupid turn signal relay in the dash...plan on $25/year on an electronic part obviously selected by bean counters
