All C5 A6 models use a timing belt. Only C5 Allroad with the 4.2 uses a chain.

Just as a sidepoint, the chain on the 4.2 is not bulletproof. A number of engines were lost.

if you pay 2k for a timing belt your on crack, local indys will do the full service including water pump and rollers and gaskets for 800

Maybe if their labour rate is $50/hr, and using aftermarket components.

With VC gaskets and cam plugs you're looking at about $1200 - $1400 here. Without gaskets, subtract $200.

I think $2K for the belt replacement is quite reasonable from a dealership, and where I live the independents aren't much less. In fact, on some maintenance jobs their prices are higher. Nor do they see as many Audis. My dealer is very good and I've always been satisfied doing business with them. I'm having the timing belt and serpentine tensioner replaced on my 02 wagon for just over $2k.

On a 4.2, i have found that many indies wont touch it, right or wrong. Those that do charge close to $2k. About $1k for a 2.8, $1200-13000 for a 2.7 and quite a bit mroe for a 4.2. I live in a high cost area, and thee prices include full "nose job" with audi or equally good parts.
