6-year-old: needs a child seat? How does it attach?

There are a number of ways they may attach

Newer ones may also have the latch attachments to the seat bottom. Generally the seats for the older children will utilize the adult belt over the assembly rather than belting the chair to the car and the kid to the chair, the way the typical system for younger kids do.

Since a 6 year old just needs to be raised up in order for the car's own seatbelt system...
to work properly, most "booster" seats don't attach at all. If your car doesn't have the rear side impact air bags, I'd recomend the one in the link below. It works well, and stays snug using the car's LATCH system.
If you have those rear side impact air bags, you'll want to keep the childs head away from those side bolsters, especially if he's prone to falling asleep and flopping his head over. I'm in that boat, so I use one of these...

It doesn't attach to anything. It just fits snugly into the rear seat (once the car's headrest is raised), and positions the child properly. If he fals asleep, I know his head isn't resting on the air bag. It's also great for traveling, since the bottom can be used on it's own in other cars.

Actually it varies with seat design, the Recaro is designed for kids up to 12 and does use a tether.
There are a number of designs to choose from at that age and they are not all the same. The recaro adjusts its seat bottom depth and back height and angle to accomodate a very wide variety of sizes. Because it is actually suspended like a real seat, my seven year old far prefers it to the padded hard plastic booster seats that are more common at that age.
