To all you oil leak fanatics!
After 75,000 miles, 95% of all cars will develop oil leaks. That's the nature of pressure and gravity. It appears that Italian cars are the worst and Japanese cars are the best. All the rest are in between with maybe Honda the best. How much are you willing to spend to have a clean undercarriage and garage floor? The Audi with it's awd system is especially prone to oil leaks, front and back. My Audi dealer is always pressuring me to have all my seals and gaskets replaced(I have 87,000 miles). For a mere $ 5000!. Guess what, I decided to save $ 5000. and instead regularly check my fluids( My car lift facilitates the job) and bought a nice mat for under the car. Also, as the engine oils are dropping in viscosity andgoing all synthetic, it gets harder for seals to keep everthing nice and tight. And, the benefit of living in the Northeast, much less rust under the car during the winter! Oil is good. The solution? We need to pressure the car manufacturers to build better seals. Tough job because it is a great$$$ money maker for dealers. But, if we get the various green car people on the bandwagon( how many barrels of oil would we save in a year, in the world, were we to eliminate oil leaks? And how about pollution from that dripping oil?) we can start a green movement that will please us all!
Any comments?
