Any ideas on how to improve the look of the shifter knob on S6?

The very best way would be to get a B6 S4.
V8 + <i><b>6-speed</b></i>.
Barring that, IIRC someone got the part from the RS 6. I think it has perforated leather (which matches the RS 6 steering wheel).

The RS6 shift **** is a good substitute...
The perforated leather looks much nicer IMO.
You can get them at achtuning.
