Default awd to 2wd conversion?

I have been trying to figure out ways to get better fuel economy out of my 2.7t, and an idea that I had was to disconnect my driveshaft to convert my car to 2wd. I was thinking I would have to fabricate a cover plate on the differential and maybe have to unplug a sensor or something, but I am not going to do anything until I get some suggestions, because obviously I do not want to hurt anything on my car. I would think that a 2wd would get better gas mileage. I am open to suggestions

Rather than try to disconnect the quattro drive, replace your A6 2.7t with a 2wd drive economy car. Disconnecting the rear (or front) drive on a quattro will probably not save you any significant fuel because you are still rotating the tranny and differential when you travel down the road.

I agree buy a 2wd economy car, these cars are made to run with quattro and that's the reason most people buy them. They are awesome cars don't ruin one, sell it and buy a different car.

LOL. Crazy. Skip this wacky idea.
The quattro isn't the problem, it's the weight. Inflate your tires to 50 psi and keep your speed down to 50- 55 mph and you will do far better than with a Quattro castration.

Suggestion: Save the money you'd spend modifying your gearbox, tricking your ABS and ESP systems, fabricating stub shafts at the dumb wheels to preload the wheel bearings, and recoding the ecu. Take that money and split it between making your 2.7T a bad ***, fun weekend/snow car, and purchasing a 1999.5-2003 VW TDI that gets 50mpg when you feel like saving gas.

FTW! Or load up 800+ ft# at the wheels, a scooter, and a bicycle.

...The bicycle is so you're fit and strong enough to kick anyone's ***, when they laugh at you over the scooter.

I fully agree with everything that was said, sorry it took me so long to reply. The reason I posted on this was to show my brother in law he is an idiot. I would never mess with my car in a negative way, It's an Audi Quattro and it will stay an Audi Quattro. Thanks for everybody's input.

better yet, apply as portion of that money to *buying gas*!

Also remember, the components of fuel economy are:

1 weight
2 aero drag
3. rolling drag
4 driveline drag

All other things equal.

You address only #4, which i speculate is the smallest.
