brake light electrical problems
Hello Everyone.
Heres my problem. I have a 1998 A6 Avant Quattro. Im getting a brake light message on my dashboard. I replaced all my brake bulbs including the high mount with the small 10 bulbs in it( 5.99 for two bulbs damn that was $25 just for the high mount). I dont feel so bad even though they still arent working because they were all burned out. Im still getting that brake light message. Now the brake lights are all turning on when I hit the brakes but only when the car is off. When the car is on the high mount light does not work. Also when I hit the brakes my dash buttons for the window defrost and the rear fog light turn on, when I release brakes the buttons turn off. I have no idea where to look now. Can it possibly be a neutral safety switch or brake light switch?

Finally figured it out. I read another post and they stated that the wiring harness in the top left corner of the hatch has a typical problem with the wires cracking due to opening and closing the hatch. Well I exposed the wires and sure enough two wires were completely cut and the others were starting to crack. I repaired the wires and put liquid tape on the ones that were starting to get cracked and problem fixed!!!
