EGT sensor causing misfires? - 2001 2.7T

EGT sensor causing misfires? - 2001 2.7T
Been having some rough acceleration, lately. VAG says EGT #1 short to ground followed by Random/Multiple cyl misfires on cyls 1, 2, &3. Are the misfires likely caused by the EGT? Or do I have bigger problems? ECU modded with APR - is the chip failing?
The Bentley CD suggests checking the injectors, ignition coils, and spark plugs as well as the EGT sensor. Since the problem is consistent on that one cylinder bank, I doubt three of the individual components would all fail at once. What other single component might be screwing up that side of my engine?
