Erratically Functioning ABS Controller - With Optional Background & DIY Philosophy
Remember I'm changing mine complete, so it's easy to split if you're prepared to remove the entire unit which will later require bleeding.
BBA-reman.com have got them instock for worldwide. I've paid £375+Tax+shipping.
You must also read this posting link - This will convince you!!

http://tech.bentleypublishers.com/thread.jspa?threadID=3409&tstart=0</a

They are available here (remanufactured) less than half the price of a new one.

http://www.bba-reman.com/index.htm</a

I found it as well via the similar VW thread link posted earlier by ga_mueller.
I've written Audi customer care and will see if that leads anywhere. This problem seems to be far too common to be coincidence. If all else fails perhaps ordering a unit through BBA-reman.com for US shipment will be the way to go.
Not only that but the lower, partly hidden electrical cover was MISSING! electronics completely open to the atmosphere.
Needless to say,I sent it back.
However I took the chance to take off the electronic module (easy) and examined the exposed electronics. Have seen a photo on another posting.
The main cover is difficult to remove. I could see that this is where the repair has taken place. BBA have cut around the edge of the cover to remove it and then (roughly) glued it back on again, I could not disturb this for fear of them not accepting it back (there was also a seal on it" void if broken").
BBA are sending another pump unit out, they have already picked up the first one (shipping includes return pick-up)
Plan now is to fit only the module, a) because my hydraulics are OK b)the whole thing in grey looks terrible - I will either clean up the module or repaint it satin black. c)I believe it's much easier than trying to bleed the whole system (inc. pump/valves/etc.) and I will have to remove the front wheel/liner/washer bottle to get at it. I will send my old module back on the BBA hydraulics part. NB there's a £70.00 surchrge if not returned in 3 days.
I hope to open up my original module before returning it to examine further.I still believe it's just a bad connection/dry joint on the PCB.

I didn't think 52000 miles was "too high" and it's a 2000 so it's just barely out of warranty.
I filed a complaint with the NTSB and recommend that anyone with this problem do the same.
I am about to take the electronics off of the side of the pump to see if there is anything obvious to the eye that can be fixed such as cold solder joints bad traces etc. I know others have physically removed the ABS units, but I would like to do this without compromising the hydraulics. Can anyone tell me if the electronics can be removed from the pump/modulator unit without interfering with the normal functionality of the braking system?????
This is a widespread problem and needs addressing.
In answer to your question it is very easy to split off the electronics module once you can physically get at it. The hard part is getting the covers off, they are bonded on and break easily. However it looks easy to make a simple replacement cover (silicon it on!) from a flat piece of metal.
So far I've seen that the relays etc are pushed simply into the pcb and just lightly crimped together.
Hope someone finds the solution soon, it will make a lot of people very happy and save them a lot of expense and grief!
Trouble is that some (BBA) have found the secret and are making big bucks from it!!!!!!!

it loses communication with the
instrument cluster due to a bad solenoid inside the hydraulic unit
98 and 99 specially the number of failures are very high
good luck
master audi technician
If Master technician thinks it's a soleniod problem, then it is still a fault with this module not the hydraulic part????? Hence the need to open up the other cover behind the solenoids.
