I tried this on a friends car last summer . still looks pretty good . I did use a high speed buffer and polisher. Be very patient when doing this.

Starting point:
After a wetsand progression (360/600/800/1000/1500/2000 grit) and couple polishes with PlastX:

I like the polyurethane/paint thinner 50/50 blend as a sealer.
This happens to be my preferred method for a first coat of poly on furniture. Much better than trying to put it on full strength. No brushmarks or bubbles, and it goes on much faster.
Also, it takes wax very well. So waxing the headlights could add more protection.
