HID auto-leveling problems?

I just purchased my 98 a6 2.8 a few weeks ago. I have a problem with the driver side headlamp. After about ten minutes of driving the lamp adjusts straight down (or about ten feet in front of the car). My local Audi dealer thought it was the auto-leveler needing to be reset or recalibrated. They were wrong. Is there a way to disable the 'auto-leveling' on this car???

Do a search or two. IIRC someone esle had the same or similar problem.

Can't offer anything but sympathy...

.. I had the same issue (both lamps, intermittently at first but then all the time) while the car was under warranty. After several dealer misdiagnoses (the first being 'uneven front tire pressure', I'm not kidding) both full lamp assemblies were replaced with new. Great at the time, and solved the problem - but it's come back again on the passenger side, only happened a couple of times though and now seems to have gone away.

Since the headlamp replacement cured the problem (albeit expensively for Audi) I'm putting it down to an intermittent 'open' on one of the connector leads -- hope springs eternal -- or gremlins within the lamp's motor electronics. A search on the UK-based Audi board last year showed that many A3s under warranty had the motors replaced rather than the headlamp assemblies, so that may help narrow it down.

Let us know if you find out anything that pins this problem down -- a number of others have posted here about it but I haven't seen a diagnosis.
