Default How long to heat my A6

As it is getting colder here in NY/NJ area, I want to know how long I should take to heat my car? I normally wait 3-5 minutes. Other wise my car feels heavy taking off. Should I wait more or not wait at all? Is there a ratio of temp to time that I don't know about?

manual says not to wait at all, just drive *cautiously* until the engine temp rises

Agreed; don't idle the car to warm it up, just take it easy, especially if you've the 2.7T.

Default When I lived in NY I would warm my cars up for 10-15 mins...

The reason Audi suggests you don't idle at startup is for emissions purposes... but I was more concerned with my car than stinking up the garage.

I personally find some of what is in the manual to be worth ignoring... this being one example. I have 99k and 112k on my cars, and haven't had any problems at all related to the engine or exhaust systems... I even warm them up in AZ.

Default You should only let it warm up about a minute at most IMO.

You are increasing wear by letting it sit and idle, and oil is not getting all the places it could/should.

Default I'm with you. How can it be better to run a car down the road than to....

... idle for a few minutes? If the motivation is emissions, then it's not a wear issue.

It specifically says it is a wear issue in the manual, and I tend to believe them : )

Default Yup, you're coolant temp should rise to operating range soon...

...and if you really want to hammer it, wait until the oil temp rises as well.

I usually let it idle down...Takes approx. 2-min. in cold weather in the NY area. Just my 2-cents.

Default I don't, and it says that in my manuals, too. If there are special issues with turbos...

Keep that in mind. But I'm not going to buy BS about "wear" when I have been warming my cars up for years, with no adverse "side effects" ...

We had this talk in the vintage A6 forum a while back... and the consensus was that even though the manual tells us to get up and go driving to heat the cats, we don't care. =)
