Default I would like to beat the dead horse for a moment...Timing belt

I have almost 70,000 miles on my A6 2.8q and was thinking of needing to do the timing belt. I was told it isn't necessary to do until a little ofer 100,000 miles. I have seen around here that around 80ish is good? I plan on driving the car for at least 4 more years.

Should I wait longer?

Thanks

Default Go ahead and get it done. Since you plan on keeping the car for that much.......

longer, it will give you peace of mind knowing that its not going to break and cause serious engine damage. You probably know the routine, water pump, belts, tensioners etc.etc. should all be done at the same time.

Default I'd do it at 75k along with the serp belt, thermostat & water pump

The official maintenance interval for the timing belt is 105k, but obviously as you get closer to that point, there is a higher possibility for failure. To me an interference engine warrants some conservativism.

Since the serp belt needs to be done at 75k, I'll do the timing belt (and tensioner), water pump and thermostat at that time. Not a bad DIY job either. Some good resources in the tech section.

DIY . . . DIY . . . DIY . . . You'll love your car more after you've taken it apart.

Default We did 6 B5 timing belts at once a month ago.

They were all 1.8Ts (both passats and a4s) but I would expect the 2.8 to go just as smoothly.

You can get a whole kit from ECS for a reasonable price, about $250+ depending if there is a sale or not. Sure beats the $700+ a shop or dealer might charge you.

It's very labor intensive hence the high price from a shop. You would need to expect to give up an entire Saturday or Sunday to do it.
