Multiple Qs
New to the site and have a few Qs.
I have had a MIL that has been intermittently on (but now ON all the time) since having a valve cover gasket and Timing belt job done about a year ago.
Just a few days ago I took the car to the dealer and they suggested one of my cats is gone, the other is on its way out and the car needs a torque converter. Looking for a indy shop to see if in fact these things need to be replaced and more importantly fix whatever needs to be fixed so that I can pass inspection this month (4/2011)!
Has anyone had aftermarket cats installed in a 2002 a6 2.7t without problems?
Also I was told the battery likely needs to be replaced soon. Where do you all generally have the battery replaced at aftermarket place? sears? firestone? NTB? Or should I do it myself. I worry that the radio will lock up or I will have other problems if I do it myself.
Appreciate any thoughts or advice!
Steve
I bought my battery from NAPA.
Also, if your alternator has never been serviced (new brushes) or replaced, I'd consider that too. Mine lasted about 100k miles.
I would have the codes read and try to understand what they mean, before accepting what your dealer is telling you about cats.
Autozone will pull the codes for free. Note them, then search on those codes here, and online in general...there are several very good VAG forums.
Unless they're rusted through, cats do not fail on their own (ok, "in general")...that's why those codes are critical. Read up on VAG-COM as well, the cable and software are by Ross-Tech. Consider buying the setup...it will save you money, in the long run.
As far as the battery, don't pay anyone to replace it for you; it is one of the easiest service items on the car. I'd put it in the same category as changing the air filters or the oil...easier than the oil, actually.

Tried clearing the MIL...no luck initially:
P17125 persisted.
Tried clearing it through transmission (interface or window on software as opposed to Electrical section) and it cleared.
I have driven in about 40 miles and so far no return of the MIL. Once it turns on again I will get it scanned to see what code is thrown first since I'm sure that one code is possibly contributing to some of the other fault codes.
Do you all know of specific threads/websites for troubleshooting DTCs?
Thanks again!

I need to add the 4th one is and add it to the DB.

I would check your vacuum lines as that can potentially cause weird cat codes when "uncounted" outside air is introduced to the system.

If you are the "audi experts" why not add some value by explaining the codes instead of just throwing out a vague sales pitch?
