Default New key programming

I've bought a new key for the A6 and the dealer wants 40 bucks to program it. After paying 180 bucks for the freakin' key you'd think the programming would be free. Can it be done by me or does the dealer have some secret tool to do it with?

Couple of questions:
1 How do I know if I have an immoblizer?
2 Which key goes into the ignition the new one or my existing (the one that came with car)
3 On which key do I press the open button on the new key or the exitsting one?

Thanks in advance

You don't have an immobilizer. You want the key you're programming in your hand.

Default AFAIU: Adding a new key to your set of keys that can operate your car requires the SKC (long)

The dealer is the only entity that could provide that information- and the dealer won't hand it out. Rumors are that now that SKC information is even 'hidden' to them in the process of matching up new keys for a vehicle. (They must have all keys that you want to work on the car at the time of 'adding' a key, so they can input them all correctly.)

I have a VAG tool in addition to access to the info posted above. It tells how to get the FOB to control locks and such, but doesn't get the key sequenced correctly to run the car. The results of following above and attempting with VAG were that the remote unlock/lock feature will work on my new 'key' fob but when I try to start up the car, it dies.

It does this because it is still not registered in the series of valid keys that the computer in the car keeps track of. Following Bentley instructions for adding a key includes the statement "use the SKC provided by the dealer...". Well, the dealer won't provide the SKC.

Summary:
Getting the remote fob thing to work for lock/unlock (whether the key is new or old): easy

Getting a new key to run your car: requires dealer

If someone has alternate info on this, let me know to straighten me out. Cuz I've STA and followed Bentley, and this is where I've landed

That makes sense. I don't like it but it makes sense.

Thanks

Default could you help me out on this?

I promise I've searched the archive... just looking for clarification if I'm wrong. (or if I'm correct for my car... but wrong for his... ugh, my brain hurts)

I suppose I'll try above instructions again and see if I have any luck.

2001 has immobilizer. 2000 does not.

He (f2kracer) has a 2000 so the immoblizer information does not apply
