Non-functioning Oil Temp/level sensor

Non-functioning Oil Temp/level sensor
Good morning All,
This weekend I did some much needed maintenance on my 2000 2.7T. On the list was an oil/filter change, replace the failed water temp sensor old black one with new green one, and a new oil temp / level sensor.
Everything went smoothly but this morning on my way to work after admiring a fully functioning Water Temp gauge, I noted that I still had NO report from the Oil Temp Sensor.
I'm wondering now if there is another less common failure point on this sensor, either in the wiring or perhaps something in the Cars software that can be adjusted or awakened by VAG-COM...
any Insight would be greatly appreciated.
As a side discussion, does any one out there know if the 2004 VW R32 was a CAN-BUS design or if it was still the older layout with limited communications.

i cheaped out and got the merle. crazy to think that the merle just "won't work" but if that's the culprit, I'll have to belly-up and get the hella... short for hella-expensive...

That is the most likely cause, the unreliability of the Merle units came up frequently in searches on this board and Audizine when I was troubling shooting the sender in my car. In my case it wasn't an option anyways since the Merle units don't have the oil quality function of the Hella so I needed to go OEM regardless.
