Default Problem with cold Multitronic?

Got an Audi A6 Avant 2003 2.4 V6 with Multitronic gearbox, 65K miles. Transmission works fine except when it’s cold and slowing down (in D-mode) and just before the car stops it jerks as bit (late clutch release?). When the engine/ transmission is warm (oiltemp > approx 80 C) it runs perfectly. This never happens in manual mode, regardless of engine/transmission temperature or if I in D-mode hit the breaks a bit harder.

Transmission oil change and service has been done according to service plan. Had an authorized Audi dealer look at it and they couldn’t say what was wrong and did some sort of software readjustment of the tranny but that naturally didn’t help…

Has anyone of there experienced the same problem with the Multitronic? Does anyone know what the difference is between automatic and manual mode that could explain this strange behavior?

About my experience , that gearbox is shot, the multitronic gearbox that came with the B6 A4's and A6's and also the new shape A6 is all problems, Audi replaces them under warrentee if the car is still in ure roadway plan, but after that it costs lots and lots, that is why here we convert to manual, cause even if you replace with a brand new box @ about $10k it is only good for about the same distance !

Default clunk

I'll through in my two cents. Disclaimer: I do not have that particular transmission. I have the earlier tiptronic that came on the 99-02?

Anyway it sounds like you're describing what might be called a hard shift. Happens only when the car is cold and it's only a slight clunk? I'd live with it and see if it gets worse. Especially since at normal operating temps it's fine.

If the dealer didn't think it's a big deal it actually might not be.

I sure as hell wouldn't jump to the conclusion that you need to replace the tranny at this point. Sometimes it's just the way it works and may mean nothing. Call it character. If you're really worried take it to another dealer for a second opinion.

You should have stopped at your disclaimer, since the rest of the post makes it clear that you don't know what you're talking about.

Multitronic was Audi's CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), so they don't suffer from clunking gear changes, since there ARE NO GEARS!

Thanks for playing, though - we have some nice parting gifts for you....
