75 - 100 feet depending on line-of-sight . . .
on my A6 it was less than 40 feet no matter the circumstances. On the S4 Avant I can park a distance away and have yet to find a situation where I had to go back toward the car.
I think it has to do with the placement of the receiver and also the design of the model (shape, glass, etc. . . ). Of course there are subjective reasons too.

This seems to be all over the map
On my A4 I had to practically be sitting in the drivers seat, on the A6 it was blocks away.
On my Saab it's hardly worth using the remote. My wife keeps thinking I'm messing with her because I can't get the doors open before she gets to the car.
I've noticed that almost all salespeople and service techs use the remote-under-the-chin routine when they're looking for a car in the lot.
