Generally I think people only really think about the outer joint as being CV joints but the inner ones are too. They do not have to cope with the same extremes of flex but they still have to maintain a constant 1:1 ratio regardless of the anglke they are operating at - within their design limits anyway.

I took the axles and ds up to my buddy's dealership and washed a lot of grease off of them in the solvent tank. The driveshaft joints feel really notchy and don't move smoothly. They also fall apart readily - I have to pay attention to keep them together once the boot is off.

One of the front axles came apart in my hand because I overextended it, according to my buddy. I'm now thoroughly annoyed with this and really feel like having a shop do it. Can someone offer me some inspiration? Lol

Update: boot kits are $60-80 per joint at the dealergyp. I'll be reusing boots I think. What about clamps, though?

i need to replace on of my boots. my car 142k miles on it. someone advised that i just replace the whole axle b/c it would probably go soon anyways.
should i do the cv boot job or just wait for the cv joint to fail/start clicking and stuff. then replace the whole axle?

Boots are cheap and last about 3 years or so. The joints are generally almost indestructable unless driven for a long time with no grease, even then they can often be OK when cleaned up and greased.

When the joint is free of grease it will naturally fall apart and be tight and awkward in flex. Just re-assemble it with new grease and a new boot - do not forget to put the boot on the shaft with the clip on losely on, before you fit the joint - I have obviously never done that!

It is a really false economy to re-fit an old boot even if it looks OK. Even a joint that clicks when run dry, 'can' be OK with new grease.
