Default Is a replacement engine best solution

I have a 2001 2.7T MT. Over the the last several months it started intermittently misfiring on acceleration and when idling and it progressively worsened.

After several trips to my local mechanic (who I have had good luck with)they determined that the plugs were getting "fouled" with oil. They did clean the plugs and car was fine for about a week has now gotten to point that it shakes violently when idling and accelerating but not too bad when cruising.

As result they feel that it either needs a rebuild or a replacement engine. Any input would be appreciated.

How about some codes? That would be a good place to start. It might be something relatively simple.

Have they performed a compression test? A leak down test? What is wrong with the engine? What error codes does the car throw?

Sounds like you need a new mechanic.

2nd this. Whether or not your motor has serious issues, there is nothing in your post that answers this. Where is the oil coming from? What happens if you clean the plugs? Does it then run fine? What is the compression? Is spark strong and constant? Any misfires?

I dont know where to start. you need someone who does.

well saying you need a new engine is premature based on the limited info you have provided. it could be that your mechanic has performed a whole bunch of other tests and come to this conclution.

The codes as mentioned are first of course ..

what about your oil consumption ? this is the first big indicator of engine wear , did they ask you about that ? did they do a leakdown ? bad valve guides ? , rings ? any bottom end rattle ?

So much to check before replacing an engine. Sounds like they must think the rings are gone if they think an engine is the way to go. Only because the labour to do that might justify that , but who knows.

Sounds to me as though your piston rings are on there way out. if you have done a commpression test it should confirm or deny thats thats the case. recently have seen the same symptoms on my buddys 2001 a4 1.8t we will be starting his rebuild next week.
