Servo Pump problem?
Have change the steering rack a couple of weeks ago and there i no leak anymore. The level of oil is at maximum. I have aslo flushed the system.
Maybe it's time to change the servopump? 200 000 km is driven.
Have you flushed the steering system before? The pump should last much longer than that if kept in good condition. I'm at 250,000 miles with the same basic pump and no problems - but I flush it every 2 years.
You can sometimes find pump rebuild kits - I think I saw one for a recent model Audi somewhere. If you're good at DYI, you can rebuild your pump.
Rod ends are new and the rest of suspension is in good shape.
Maybe the sound has been there before, I'm not sure. I did listen alot because I had the rack replaced :-)
I would try to find a low traction surface and try to replicate the sound. If I can't, then it would indicate there is enough play between the ground and tires to eliminate the binding in the QTR system and all is good/normal when you do hear it on good surfaces with low tread.
We would not hear it on cars with new tires, but many used cars or cars in for service with less tire tread would often make this sound at the dealer.
