Default steering rack bolts question

so i've been reading and reading through tons of posts trying to figure out the origin of the rattling in the front end after my suspension overhaul and found a lot of posts where people had similar rattles and it turned out to be loose steering rack bolts - is there any way i can access them to at least check and see if any are loose with my hands, without having to take anything apart? i know one is underneath the battery, but i'd like to see if i could determine if any are loose before i bring it to my mechanic again for another wild goose chase

Look at my post history, some time ago I posted how to check this.

There is one under the battery, and the other top bolt is on the bottom of the plenum, on the brake master cylinder side.

For a point of reference, mine started clunking recently too. I check the bolts and found them tight. Will be doing the rack over Thanksgiving.

Good luck.

it seems the clunking has been contagious lately.....could be due to having 10+ year old cars, probably explains the creaks i've started developing inside as well, anyway, my problem better be the rack bolts, we've checked everything else. what's funny is, for most of these rattling stories i've read, the rattling has started after major suspension work was done. maybe removing the tie rods somehow loosened up the rack bolts? i'll check the drivers side tonite and will wait till the weekend to check under the battery

Glad I saw this thread. Checked mines a few moments ago, passenger side was finger loose. Tightened it down and it helped a bit with the knock/clunk I've been hearing turning the wheel at stand still.

Car still feels pretty sloppy at highway speed when load is shifted to either side

looks like I'll finally learn how to do some suspension work.

Good to hear.....it always seems to be the passenger side bolt - just checked my driver side and it's tight, can't wait to remove the battery and check the other one - wish there was an easier way to check it

I believe there is a third bolt under the rack that needs to be checked as well. I checked mine years ago and don't remember exactly where it is, but I know I got to it without issues when the car was on the ramps.

good to know, i thought there was a third, but hadn't heard much mention of it, probably because you need a lift or ramps to access it. if i find it's not the passenger side this weekend, i'll have it checked next time a have an oil change. i did notice a bolt missing from the battery tray, but i don't think that's the source of the rattling

Well how about that! Turns out the passenger side bolt was loose, all tightened up and the clunking is gone....plus i cleaned up the massive pile of junk clogging the drain to boot
