Default Part Number Request and Question...

Can anybody provide the part number for a Transmission Control Module / Unit (TCM) for a 2002 3.0 A6 Avant Quattro?

I can't seem to find a place to just look up the part number online... I see some used TCMs on ebay but just want to make sure it's the correct part as it seems a lot of them are for 2.7 cars and not sure they are the same.

I've searched here a bunch and there are lots of mentions of the TCM but some threads seem to contradict others. If I buy the correct part number TCM, is it simply plug and play? Or do I need to get it re-coded or something like that?

Thanks!

Thanks for the response. Comments to each of your points below....

1. I don't have a VCDS.

2. I don't have the car in my possession so I can't check it now.

3. How do I check that it is coded the same way as the original? Will it be marked on the module?

Get the right information before making a decision.
I know i lack the information. That is why I am here...trying to find out what that information is... There is not a part number for the tcm specific to a 2002 3.0 q listed in a parts guide or repair manual or something along those line? It's really unique to my car?

I have committed to purchase the car in question but can't take delivery until later this week or next weekend. I am hoping to source the part now so I can try the car on the road ASAP.

There is the off chance a dealer could translate your VIN into a TCM p/n…..but it's a risk.

Thanks for the info.

So imagine you're talking with somebody who is kind of an idiot when it comes to DIY auto repairs (not me....just, some guy I know)... But every 2002 A6 3.0 Quattro Avant doesn't have the same TCM? Why not / what would cause them to be different?

1. Running changes during production, either on the car or on transmission. Think different supplier, different batch, GM ignition switch ring a bell? Different torque converter or different transmission shift points including TC lockup.
2. Different sales area, e.g., Cali (emissions) or Colorado..high altitude. Perhaps different final gearing, etc.
3. The Audi fairy just does it that way...
