Temp Sensor
A few weeks ago, my temp jacked up to 'H', then the temp warning light came on. The next day it was fine, no issues. Over the last week, the sensor has been either stuck on 'C', or back in the middle where it is normally.
The service dudes said the temp sensor is fine, but I might have a bad cluster (that needs to be replaced by the dealer for at least $1,500). Does this sound right to you guys?
Also, does the temp sensor that shows on the dash kick the warning message, or does the warning message get kicked by the actual engine temperature?
thanks guys....I'm getting increasingly frustrated with a car I love (and don't want to get rid of). $4K in maintenance costs over the last 12 months.

The green CTS "coolant temp sensor" is cheap to replace and sends two signal values, one is for the cluster gauge and the other is for the ECU, I believe that the cluster module instead of the ECU correlates a high temp warning based on the CTS signal "ohm value" that is the same for the gauge.

Also, does the actual engine temp trip the warning light? or does a high temp reading from the sensor trip the warning light?
I got a high temp warning/reading a month ago (only once). It's the only time I've seen a warning light like that.
These questions, I'm sure, sound totally idiotic. I can admit that I'm a village idiot when it comes to cars (among several other things).

Yes and yes.
Change the CTS and call it a day.
No you are not by any means an idiot, you have a concern and we are here to help.
Good luck!
