Temperature gauge stuck at cold

01 A6 2.7 temperature gauge been erratic. Notice it stayed at C for most part during the last 2 weeks. A couple of times it will move to midway between C and H and stayed there but other times I will see the gauge start to move up but then returned back to C and stayed there. Searched the forum for coolant sensor. Replaced the coolant sensor with the green one from ECS did not fix the problem. Gauge now stuck at C. No problem starting the car in the morning. Any idea what else may be wrong?

Bad thermostat, do you have very warm heat?

Doesn't move at all now? Bad sensor or the wire isn't plugged onto the sensor all the way.

Buy another sensor from the dealer.

2nd, most likely sensor. C5s use the green top sensor as well I believe, $25 from dealer.

Probably the $7 sender...10 minute job.

If it is the thermostat stuck open, the temp would come up as the car sat...then drop as you got moving. Based on your description and the popularity of the sender to fail, I'd say it's def the sender.
