No idea, I just bought it with the belt already stripped. tore it down to find out what the real damage was.

Now its time to get the heads/valves checked, the turbos evaluated and probably at least upgrade to vast piggie downpipes. Not sure what else I will have $$$ for. Will know more once I get things to the shop in the next day or 2.

118k. For the price I paid, I can put 4k into it and still come out ahead. Should be a sweet ride when I get it back together.

Alright more info.

Shop estimates 1500 for the heads to be completely gone though and cleaned and replacing the 2 bent valves (assuming no others are bent).

Looks like one of the K03's is a little more worn than the other, but I really dont have 1500 extra to drop on turbos right now to go K04s. I want to get this car up and running in stock gear 1st and then make changes I think. (and yeah i know its a ton of work to pull that motor, but I did it once in less than a week after work, I can do it again )

Block looks good, pulled the oil pan cover off, cleaned it out, wiped down as much as I could inside to get ride of old gunk.

The shop suggested maybe changing the front crank oil seal, this hard? I don't see it spelled out in the bentley, though they have the rear seal procedure. Or did he mean rear seal and misspeak?

Also, the clutch has a sachs sticker on it. Is this a replacement? Or could it be original? I haven't taken it off yet, but I probably will.

I will most likely screw around with a few more things over the next few days and get it to the shop by the end of next week and have them put it all back togther. Once I have it to them, 48 hours turnaround for them to put everything back in. Then we shall see what other problems come up. (I am expecting to find other things, already discovered the pass front fender was replaced along with the headlight and the headlight wasnt even installed correctly, as it doesnt have the nutplate on the bottom mount.)

Wish me luck!

Front crank seal you could do whenever you do a timing belt job but i would leave it unless you you can see it has been leaking .. there is a small keyway on the crank pully to the crank that sometimes sheers when you undo the bolt. That is BAD news if that happens .. will need a new crank pulley .if your lucky you wont damage the crank .. I would say the risk/ reward thing says leave it alone if it aint broke .

MAybe it's just me but I wouldn't pay 1500 bucks to have the heads done on a 12 year old Audi .. but then again I would never pay 4 G for one either .. i would rent a spring compressor, buy some valves and throw them in. It's not an F1 car and to have the heads completely " redone" on this car would not be worth it . put the heads up side down and put some fluid in the valve area with the pluf in . leave it overniht .. if the fluid has run down you have bent valves, if it is still there your sealing .

just my opinion though .. as always .

Further update on the heads.

3 bent exhaust valves + multiple intakes bent or damaged. One of the cam tensioners failed and that is what probably caused the overall engine failure. So I am looking at a parts list of

Cam tensioners, chain, multiple valves. This on top of the labor cost. Initial tenative estimate on just heads was approx 1500, I know that valves can be had for around 20-30$ each, so that's not too bad. Its the cam tensioners and chain that have me worrying about spending too much.

So is it worth rebuilding a head vs ditching the entire motor and grabbing a used motor with say 80K on it or so and throwing that in?

I went one better.. audis4parts.

Getting a 2.7t longblock with 85k miles + turbos(75k miles), downpipes and an already installed timing belt kit. Under 2k shipped .

So now I just have to wait for it to get here...

This is pretty funny, I too bought the car already broke, and I too bought a longblock + turbos, also from audi's for parts! I actually was torn between your engine and the other which I bought since yours had all new stuff on it, but my motor has 95k on it and had recently had a new timing belt installed, so I am going to put some new gasket set on it from Blauparts as soon as they come in. I spoke with Bryan and Brad several times and they were awesone to deal with and very helpful. Good luck!
