what function and how to test..

Part name - Vacume pump
Can anyone tell me what this pumps function is? what exactly does it do? I have a good idea but need to make sure of what it does.
If this pump was to go bad, can anyone tell me what would happen with the car. in otherwords what would be a sign that it went bad.
Does anyone know how to test this pump? or is there a way to see it functioning on vag-com?

That part number is the electric vacuum pump for the brake servo. Being electric, you should be able to tell if it works/running by placing your hand on it while the engine is running (or maybe just have the ignition on). You may also need to have someone cycle the brake pedal while you check it out. BTW, that part number has been superceded by a new PN: 8E0–927–317–A.
