Default Wheel Bearing

Front right wheel bearing is bad. How hard is this job, is it easier to just replace the hub or is the bearing not so bad? Thanks!

you need to have the bearing pressed in and out of the spindle but often times the bearing separates leaving the race bearing on the hub. You will need a race bearing separator for which you can buy at a place like harbor freight tools for @40 bucks or so. Best to leave it to a shop if you don't have the tools, at least the pressing in as its a bit more important then just pounding the old out.

it's no harder then any other car with a pressed in Bearing. You will need access to a press though! Some Napa stores have them and if you buy their bearing they will press it for you. So check around for who will press it for you, then your set. Just like doing a brake job except a few more bolts and you will need the tool for the axle nut, I forget what the front has either a great big nut or a really big Allen, so check that out as well before you start! the hardest part is to remove the spindle those pinch bolts on the upper arms seize so spray them good with liquid wrench before you start. if you bust them, no big deal you just use a little heat from a torch and pound them out and replace!

depending on the age of your ride and if your running stock suspension or not, but buying a used strut is quite often about the same price as the wheel bearing. I have had good luck over the years just swapping the strut out on my type 44s and on my C4 with never having a repeat of the same wheel going bad.

YMMV though as it depends on the condition of the replacement one and how **** you are about changing a part to another used one.

John with the bolted in aluminum carrier, it is also pressed in to the upright, or it just a snug fit.
I have a 2003 and am pretty sure its the aluminum carrier, I will verify before ordering parts. But I am wondering if this would eliminate any need for a press?

Do the bolted in bearings need a press? Or just one of these? http://www.harborfreight.com/bearing...set-93980.html

Yip, both the bearing into the housing and hub into bearing.

You can do it with this ( http://www.harborfreight.com/fwd-fro...ers-66829.html ) if you have an air impact wrench. I used this one http://www.harborfreight.com/air-too...ench-2623.html , but I think a lesser torque version will still work. I did need that kit you had the link to as by bearing came apart when I was pulling the hub out of it. so I needed the bearing spreader to pull the inside ring of the broken bearing off the hub shaft. This might not happen to you so you may not need it.

Hope that helps

Cheers

Default Does the tool you used remove the hub from the bearings?

I bought this tool today and preparing to do this work. But how did you get the hub and the bearings separated with this tool? I imagine you used a two arm puller as well?

Hey Derrick

There is one piece missing, that I totally forgot about. I fabbed up a Hub puller from some 1" angle iron I had laying around. Hope this pic makes sense, I welded mine together, but I figured not everyone has a welder so I drew it up using bolts. http://www.vaglinks.com/Pics/WheelBe...Hub_Puller.jpg

You will need to do this first (pull the hub out of the bearing) so the bearing can come out the back of the housing (control arm). I "overdid" mine and made it extremely solid, but it really does not need to be, just as an FYI. I used the bolt and one of the "plates" from the set you got to do the pulling.

I will try and take some pics tonight of mine.

Hope that helps.

Cheers
