Why is it that every time I think about modding my car, something comes up?

Default Why is it that every time I think about modding my car, something comes up?

I was planning on getting new shocks and springs for my Avant, but now, I have a recurring MIL.. Checked the codes monday, they were related to O2 sensors and cat efficency.. Neat. Now, this morning, it's back. Naturally, my VAG COM is home, but I suspect that it's gonna be the same thing. I'd be remiss if I got shocks and springs, and ignored the MIL issues, and of course the dead ABS, and lord knows what else..

Grr.

Default Kris, meet the Audi gods. Audi Gods, I see that you already know Kris. <edit - link added>

Somewhere in the tech section there is a write-up on replacing the rear OXS units with a resister to trick the ECU into "thinking" that everything is cool. Kinda of a hack, but I would do it in a second before buying a CAT (or two).

Unless you think the sensor are bad or something else is contributing to this.<ul><li><a href="https://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng53.shtml">Fooling the ECU</a></li></ul>

Default Oh, I already have intimate knowledge of the Audi gods... :-(

But yeah, I'd rather fool the car before replacing the cats too.. If it's just the sensor, I can live with that.. Just venting is all. Strange that it took a whole day for it to come back.. I guess it's time to start toting the VAG COM around again.

And thanks for the link, I feel a TON better now!!!!

Default The dead ABS, is it merely the module? and man 02 sensors, pain in the *** on the 4.2's.....

I understand that that 02's are located in front of the precats on the 4.2's and to change em out, you gotta drop down everything, including the subframe to gain access.

It does seem like Murphy's Law though doesn't it.

Default Yeah, it's the computer. Truth be told, if I could figure out a way to just ...

convince the car that it doesn't have ABS, to turn off the confounded lights and beeps, I'd do that, since I pretty much hate Anti Stop Brakes anyway.

the secondary O2 sensors on the 2.8 are very easy to get to.. luckily. Another joy of the 2.8! :-D

Default The problem is that you lose EDL as well.

It's not great, but better than nothing.

Default I have not missed it all winter. In fact, I think it's better without..

less disruptions across the axles, smoother drive. The only thing that I would really miss is the proportioning function of the ABS.. It's my understanding that our cars don't have mechanical proportioning valves, but rely on the ABS to do that function.. However, I have yet to lock up my rears, even in snow. Yet another nice thing to the rear heavy Avant..

Default Agreed. EDL is not a huge loss.

Still better traction than 95% of the other vehicles on the road :-)

Default Yep!!! Truth be told, I don't think I ever really needed EDL..

It's more of a gimick than anything. Even on the old cars, with the locking center and rear diffs, I think I might have locked them up one or 2 times.. That's it. Never once got stuck in any of my 4000q cars... Got stuck pretty bad in my 80q when I backed it into a snow bank rear window deep... just a little shoveling, it drove out.. Same for when I belly hung it pulling into my friend's road.. Got my A4 totally high centered once, all wheels were off the ground.. that took a buddy's backhoe to pull it off it's beaching.. (that, after an attepmt to drive over a 3 foot high snow pile left by the plow at the end of my road.. in retrospect, it was pretty stupid to even try. :-) )

Thus far, have not managed to stick my A6.. I don't think our old A4 got stuck either.
