Default 3.2L Intake valve deposits

Greetings all, my wife and I are considering purchasing a 2008 Avant with about 28k miles. We currently have an A4 Avant 2.0T and I've kept an eye on that motor's issues with intake valve deposits. How does the 3.2L seems to be holding up in this regard? Being FSI I'm sure its an issue, but how prevalent and how has Audi been handling it when it does occur?

Thanks for your help.

I've never had it happen to mine. But some cars have had the deposits get bad enough to affect drivability in as few as 5k miles. My S.A. basically said to make sure I use a good fuel with detergents in it, like Chevron, or Shell, and to put my foot in it every once in a while. So I guess as long as you don't granny it you should be ok. I have 63K on mine and it's never been an issue.

Thanks for your input.

Another forum search turned up more info than I had initially found, but I'd still like to hear anyone's experiences.

I have the infamous valve deposit on my A6 since day one, been in the dealer 3 times in less than a year. Each time they clean the valve and the rough idle in the morning and CEL came back on after about 3000 miles. The last time I was there, they did a software update, that couple with putting in Shell V-power and VW ingector cleaners every 2000 miles may or may not have done the trick. Its been 2500 miles now and it is still starting pretty smooth in the morning.

+1. That's what we've been told too. Good quality premium unleaded and you need to blow the thing out (Italian tune up) once in a while.

Came back from the dealer. They said they updated software and put some cleaner in. I have to drive the car for 50 miles and bring it back. They might do valve cleaning for it.
I only use Shell V-Power.
Where can i get VW cleaner?

The conventional cleaners won't help cleanse the rear of the valves...the cars are direct injection To my knowledge, the primary clean-up routines are physical cleaning of that surface or one of these induction-type cleaners that get introduced into the intake. BG makes the system. I suppose something like SeaFoam would be another.

From my reading here an in other forums, it seems that even induction-type cleaners are largely ineffective on these FSI motors. Head removal & physical cleaning seems to be the only method with tangible results.

What I'd really like to know is what makes one engine more susceptible than another to the problem? I mean some owners have a problem at 3k miles, others have no noticeable issue with over 30k miles. Whats causing this huge difference? Driving style? Oil? Fuel? Improperly functioning PCV? Motor built on Friday afternoon, lol?
