Default A6 owners that also owne(d) an A4

I have decided to garage my A6 over the winter and get a second car (both to extend the life of my A6 and so if I have a breakdown I always have a car on hand). That and I can get away with more with suspension and new breaks :P

I am 5'10 with a stocky build and find the A6 a perfect fit.

Is the A4 much smaller in terms of how the driver seat feels?

At this point I think I am getting either a 2004ish A4 or Subaru as AWD is a must.

I had an '07 A4 and you will definitely feel the difference in the width of the car but it may still be ok. Just try and sit in one and drive it around for a while and see if anything cramps up.

I'm 6'0" with a stocky build. I fit comfortably in my wife's '06 A4 when she had it. It's a bit tighter than the A6, but the seats are just as comfy and you won't feel cramped. It's a good daily driver in 2.0T quattro format.

The biggest difference you will notice is the width of the driver space. I think the ability to move the seat will give you plenty of leg room at 5' 10", the only issue will be do you feel cramped "side to side." When I was test driving A4s before I bought my current A6 I liked the feel of the driver's seat (I'm about an inch or so shorter than you) The deciding point for me was the great deal I got on the A6, nothing at all against the A4. I would not have any problem owning one.

But the above advice is spot on. You need to drive one around and see if it would work for you.

before I got my C6 A6 I had my 99 A4 1.8T. Space-wise definitely a big difference but as far as driver seats and space you should be fine. I am 6'3 240 stocky built too so it shouldn't be a problem for you. However if you ever have any passengers for the backseat they'll feel a huge difference in their leg room (lets just say almost NO leg room for them).

I had an 04 A4 3.0. the A6 definitely has more space, but I am 5'11" and had zero issues fitting in the A4. My A4 had the sport package, and I felt it had tighter steering and held the road better. The 3.2 FSI kicks the crap out of the 3.0. Ditto on the back seat. I have 2 kids and was tired of them putting their feet on my seat. I am not a big fan of the 1.8T, so I would stay away from those.

Drive and decide.

All good news it seems, looking forward to going for a test drive.

No comparison. Love the look of the B7 A4 but hate, hate, hate the cramped interior. I am 6', athletically built and fully appreciate the more roomy A6. The B8 A4 is a tremendous improvement however.

I had an A4 as a loaner. I believe it was a 2006 or 2007. What amazed me was how "unrefined" the 2.0 was. It was also small inside. I am 6'1". We have a 2002 maxima and quite honestly I liked the Maxima much better.

Besides if you get a B7 A4 it has a timing belt which is an expesive repair if you cant do it yourself.

I drive both all the time. The back seats take the biggest hit, but in the front, it's not a big deal. I just feel farther away from the door and passenger in the A6.

But the B7/B8 are smaller than the B6, right?
