Default AUTOCROSS and the c6 A6

Today I took my new to me A6 to an autocross. I would have done better if I had realized earlier sport mode is the quicker way to go. I place 2nd in my class right behind ford fusion. The fusion is several hundred pounds lighter than the A6Q but all in all I feel I did well considering I'm new to the quattro and had the heavier car.

I tried manual mode but I found I needed to down shift at a few points in the course. Sport mode was more consistent and was always in the right gear ( knocked almost 4sec off my time vs manual). Audi spent lots of time and money figuring out the right programing, who am I to think I can do better.

mm S mode is pretty accurate....so the shift paddles are pointless..

Autocross is much like Gymkana or slalom racing. Like the others you are racing the clock instead of another driver. The courses are laid out in a large paved lot using traffic cones (the short rubber ones ) so if you hit one there is no damage. Most of the courses are short 30-45 seconds but sometimes there is a big course in the 1-2 minute range, often the bigger ones are near or over a mile in length. Esentially these are a dehydrated road course that one car at a time runs against the clock. These events are run by the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) in the US and other organizations in your home country. The SCCA insures these events incase there is an incident. Autocross is a great way to find the limits of what a car can do without the worry of crashing, if you loose it you will only hit soft cones.
