How can you tell if it has Navigation?

I'm guesssing you're trying to find a good way to determine if a car advertised online has navigation or now. A good rule of thumb is to pay attention to center information display (between tach & speedo). If it's in color, the car came from the factory with navigation. If the display is in monochrome (all red), the car didn't come from the factory with nav.
Granted, there might be a small number of cars where a buyer decided to have OEM nav installed as an afterthought, but this should be a rarity.
So when you're browsing through the advertisement pictures, pay attention to the center console. If it's not in color (even with a tech package), more likely than not it doesn't have the nav option.

In 2005 the center information display was not available with a color screen no matter what options were ordered. Starting in 2006 it was available with color screen if you ordered either NAV or Laser Cruise Control. So if you are looking at a car online it may be missing the color screen and still have the Nav if it is a 2005. In addition, if it is a 2006 or later model it may have the color screen because of the laser cruise unit and still be missing the nav unit.

Surely the advert will say 'navigation' on it???
I know in the UK it commands a premium of around $2-3k, and trying to sell a car like the A6 without nav is very hard.
Can't see a seller missing that option off the advert??

True, but I have seen a couple of places selling cars "With Nav" simply because it has the Nav button and a big screen in the dash. Yet when you look closely at the pictures you will see the screen clearly says that Navigation is not installed. I guess some dealers can't read...

The screens from the BASIC and the High are NOT the same! If you can buy a car without navi or basic plus navi you are able to upgrade to high. I did several A4 8K, A6 4F, Q5, A5.
You also can put a garmin computer behind the MMI Basic. I have the interface avalible or just put in DVD / TV etc.
