Default How dangerous is driving with broken coolant fan control module?

Hi guys. In my A6 4.2 2005 service diagnosis protocol is written "18339 P1931 002 Coolant Fan Control Module-J293 Malfunction Intermitten".

As i understand, there is some problems in coolant fan.
Does it means that it doesnt work at all?
In my country there is winter now and as i understend, this Fan switches on only in hot day.
Can i drive my car without repairing fan or should i repair it? How often you fan switches on and in what F degrees it switches on?

During the winter months you could be OK.

The fans are mostly for when the car isn't in motion, like sitting in traffic or at stop lights etc etc..

While driving the air is passing over the radiator cooling it so the fans don't really have any significance at that point.

I'd definitely replace it before the warmer months get here.

Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Pete

Pete, thanks for your answer. It really healped me

Till the summer i will try to install new fans.
Where i live, summers are not so hot (for example like in California), but anyway i will do that.
P.S. Does this mean that air conditioner also does not works if fans are broken?

Thanks

to test fans you need to drive car around untill coolant at operation temp then leave car standing with running motor and watch for fans to turn on.

I do not think that AC must triger fans at cold temperature. on the other side even in the winter running motor supposed to produce more heat then it would emit into standing air. so sooner or latter fans must turn or temperature gauge move higher.

also the fans controlled by pretty simple module. you should be able to pull it off and check it. maybe there is a bad contact. in any case do not start with replacing fans.

Your error msg seems to indicate that the problem is intermitten. Either way, it is very risky to drive a car that has a bad radiator fan. Your engine has a high compression ratio and can heat up rather quickly. Unless you're driving in the freezing conditions, I would personally get this fixed right away. I'm not sure where you live exactly but sitting in the traffic for a few minutes could overheat your engine. The consequence is a blown/craked engine. This is not something you want to mess with. I can't imagine the control module being that expensive.

Wery usefull last 2 posts guys, because in service mechanics told me that i have to replace all fan system, which costs aprox. 500$ maybe more.

I have bad feeling, that they want get more money from me and trying to tell me wrong idea.

Now i will insist that all fan system should not be changed.

Guys, maybe someone can tell me where i can buy in internet fan control module for 4.2? (I live in europe and that would be nice if shipping to europe would be available)

Thanks
