Default A7 vs S6

Hey Guys - I currently have a 2012 A7 and absolutely love the car - it's my first Audi (coming over from BMW). My only complaint about the A7 would be that I wish it was just a little bit faster. I considered the ECU route, but decided that I'd rather not void the warranty.

Now I'm at a cross-road. In about a year, I'm going to need to have a car with a 3-person backseat (2012 A7's didn't have that as an option). I'm considering trading in for a 2015 A7 (should have slightly more HP for the mid-year refresh) or going for the 2014 S6. I like the looks and practically of the A7 and the performance of the S6. Any suggestions? Has anyone driven/compared both before?

With young kids, I have also had backseat considerations. That pretty much ruled out the Mercedes CLS550. As you know, starting in 2014 the A7s have the standard three seat backseat.

I think you should drive them and follow your gut. Consider the suspension, tires and types of roads you typically drive on when decided which car to order, and which options, too.

Like others, I suggest avoiding the 20" tire sport package. Too bouncy for youngins'! The 20 inch non sport is much more compliant, but I special ordered with 19s.

I drove A6, not S6, and several A7 variations. A7 is just so much cooler!

Agreed - I got 19's on the current A7 - 20's seemed too harsh for me. I wonder how much of a HP bump the 2015 A7 is going to get.

Haha - that would be the perfect choice, but a little bit too pricey for me.

I just noticed that the new 4.0T A8 isn't that fire off price wise either. I wonder if anyone has cross-shopped the S6 with the A8? Same engines in both; very similar price points.

OK, bear with me as I spell out an old fogey's killjoy view point. I would go for a 2015 A7 TDI. Why a TDI? Fuel economy, and with that comes savings that will be needed for diapers, formula, etc. Why are you looking for something with a little more HP? How fast can you go in the tri-state area (on a consistent basis) that you need more HP especially if you're carrying three children in the back? I know that they won't always be in the car with you but think about how much you need a car that has more than what you already have. I've worked in Europe for the past 13+ straight years so maybe I'm a little off on how you can drive in the states now but I'm pretty sure that LEO's still frown on 100 mph joy rides. I'd get the TDI now and hold out until 2032 when the kids have graduated and you can get the fastest, sexiest Audi they make then and have the time of your life.

As I said in the beginning, sorry for the killjoy attitude, especially on Christmas day, but I wanted to give you something different to think about. In the end, whatever choice you make will be the best for you and will make you happy. I hope you enjoy your decision and congratulations on the new arrival!

I agree, but I'm a TDI nut. If you really want speed and no tickets, you'll have to take the route many of my Porsche friends have taken: buy a plane.

Thank you for the input - I haven't test driven the A7 TDI yet - how is it? Does it feel a lot slower than the 3.0T?

I just went from a 2012 A7 to a 2014 S6 and have zero regrets. I certainly loved the styling of the A7, but something was always missing for me. Before my A7 I had a 2003 RS6 so I always missed the performance. The A7 certainly seemed to turn more heads, but once I am sitting in the S6 and step on the gas I completely forget about my old A7. The interior is the same other than much better seats in the S6. I have two young children and it is nice now that I can fit an extra passenger in the back. All in all you would'nt regret it!
