Catalytic Coverage In California ?
My 2012 A7 looks like it might have a cracked cat. I heard a pop but couldn't tell where it was and car drove fine for a period. Short while later while accelerating from a stoplight the car sounded like it had no exhaust whatsoever and got slight smell of gas.
I'm right at 7.5 years since original in service date. Federal emissions states 8 years, but California sates 7 years. From what I understand though California is in addition (not replacement) to Federal so depending on item failed if California is longer on that specific part it overrides Federal.
From what I can tell the Cat isn't even mentioned in the California coverage but is on the Federal at 8 years.
Does anyone have any experience and can confirm. I want to make sure I have the facts before getting the estimate from the dealer.

Dealership is stating that catalytic converter is not covered within 8 year Federal warranty due to failure of housing welds.
They state only internal failures of catalytic converter is covered. This doesn't seem to match federal guidelines.
Can someone please comment.

A cracked cat should be considered a failed cat and should be covered. I'm guessing they are stating it's not throwing a code so it's not covered? Have you contacted another dealership? You maybe can try calling one of the major manufacturers of cats and see what they say.
