Default cracked windshield

My car is two months old and last week some @#!hole was weedwacking in the median of a busy road. He sent a rock flying and it cracked my windshield.

Its a small star type crack a little biger than a quarter on the lower driver side. It is not in field of view, directly. Half of it is actually in the blackout area at the bottom of the windshield area.

After consulting with the local dealer i decided to see if could be repaired first. So I took it to a repair place. I looked great initially and it was barely noticable. However, after a couple of days it is becoming more noticable again.

I am considering replacing the windshield (at audi). I am nervous to do so though. Anyone with any experience or recommendations regarding this? Thanks!

In my area, Audi obtains the factory windshield and a local glass shop installs and it works well. If you're like me, a non-OEM windshield will not do. A star crack that large will almost certainly enlarge, especially with a cold windshield and the defrost on. I would consult the dealer, have the windshield ordered and have them or their recommended shop do the work. An independent shop most certainly will do their best to remain in the dealership's good graces. My sympathies; I had this happen and my eye was continually drawn to the chip. Replaced the windshield and all was well.

Yeah, dealers don't do glass anymore, they sub-contract it out and bump up the price.
I had my windshield replaced by a glass guy that two of my local dealers recommended.
He was done in under an hour.

You probably have a windshield replacement clause in your car insurance policy - give em a call. My deductable was like $50.

Thanks for the reply. I do have that clause in my insurance. I am worried about breaking the factory seal and so forth but i really dont have an option. So i will go to my dealer. they told me that they can do it and that it would take a day. They were pointing out the tome they take vs. the time auro glass places take (ie 1 hour). Hopefully the audi tech guys here know what they are doing. Thanks again.

Did you watch them do the installation? I had my windshield replaced today and it took approx 3 hours. There was a little chit chat inbetween some of the steps but I can't see how they could get it down to an hour -- especially with some steps (like priming areas after the old windshield is removed).

They get it down to an hour by NOT doing some steps (like priming areas after the old windshield is removed).

Damn man, sorry to hear this.

I'd go the route that UmIsThisThingOn mentioned. Going through your insurance company makes this a Comprehensive claim and does not count against your premiums. They'll contract out to Safelite Auto...or whoever has the monopoly on windshield repair in your area. lol The problem you may run into is them finding an OEM or hell an aftermarket windshield for a car that is so new. I would aks for OEM products...the insurance company may not pay or ask you to cover the difference.

Got my car back from the audi dealer yesterday for the winshield replacement. Everything seems great so far. It cost a little over $1,800.00, so now i get to deal with the insurance company with that.

I also had the windows tinted and it looks absolutely fantastic. A special thanks to whoever on these boards recommended the 35% tint because it is perfect. Man, the car looks great.

It may rain today in south florida, so hopefully the windshield is all good....

Seriously???!!!!! You couldn't go through your insurance first? $1,800.00 seems like a lot for windshield.
