Drivers side rear compartment?

Drivers side rear compartment?
Okay, for the record - I am known for my stupid questions. In my line of work, it helps to be willing to do so :-) I was fiddling around in the rear compartment to locate a thunk sound (when driving over sudden bumps) and discovered the enclosed compartment on the drivers side. I took the compartment lid off and peeked inside. Anyone know what exactly is in that compartment? There are wires harnessed but it is not clear to me what the purpose of the area is for.
