The HUD shows navigation instructions including direction heading and lane profiles, speed, active cruise control information, rear blind spot, cruise control information, along with your speed. There may be a few more - but I saw all of those on a test drive. It was a little strange that certain displays would turn off - meaning that when I only saw my current speed, I couldn't figure out a way to redisplay navigation even if the route guidance was still engaged.
It's definitely more than just the speed and look 5 times better than the BMW 2-color HUD. That being said, BMW just released a full color version similar to Audi, but it's not flowing through the current gen cars.

The head up display can show the following contentt: Current vehicle speed (always displayed), Navigation information (when route guidance function is active and must be activated in the MMI), Adaptive cruise control/Active lane assist content(must be activated in MMI), Current ACC set speed (appears temporarily if modified), current ACC control distance (appears for a short period of time if a change is made to the control distance for ACC), Audi Night vision assist warning (activated in MMI), and Red warning symbols (when red warning signals appear in the instrument cluster, they also appear on the head-up display).

I have the HUD in my A7. Frankly I think it is a bit disappointing. Despite adjusting the brightness, I still sometimes find it hard to read the speed in bright light. Overall the quality of the display and available info doesn't compare to the pic of the BMW HUD display above.
My wife has a HUD in her GMC, and in addition to speed and navaigation data, it includes radio station and song info when you change the station. The A7 HUD just isn't that impressive.
That said, I love the car. Just think Audi came up a bit short on the HUD wow factor.

if you are ordering its a mistake not to order innovation.

Don't know what to tell you. It gets washed out at times for me--might be partly a result of wearing sunglasses, although I don't experience that wash out with the HUD in our GMC.
I wouldn't order the Innovation Package JUST to get the HUD, as I don;t think it adds enough, but I got it for that plus all the other things it includes.

Different displays from manufactures are polarized at different angles. I'd be curious if you tilt your polarized sunglasses a little on the GM and the Audi how much clearer they would be. In my wife's X5 the HUD disappears completely. However, same thing goes for just about any LCD display. Heck - look at a gas pump display at a 45 degree angle with your sunglasses on and you'll only see black in the display. Just part of the technology.
